As we continue explore the theme, “Follow me, I will make you fishers of men”. We see that Jesus promises to do something in us if we accept the invitation to follow him. What is a promise? The dictionary defines it as a declaration or an assurance that one will do a particular thing or that a particular thing will happen. We have all made promises or have been promised something by someone, and sometimes we do what we have promised, or we receive what has been promised, but there are those times where promises have been broken. What we are assured of is that the Lord is not slack concerning his promise (2 Peter 3:9). From God’s promise to bless the earth through Abram, to His promise to David that the throne would not depart from his lineage to the promise of the coming of the Holy Spirit to guide us. His word shall not return unto him void but shall accomplish what he pleases (Isaiah 55:11).
When Jesus said, “I will”, he was making a promise, but that promise is contingent upon us following him. When we begin the put off the flesh and become more like him in spirit, he begins to fulfill his promise in us. He begins to do his work in us, molding us into the instruments he wants us to be. We present our bodies as living sacrifices accepting his transformative power to make us into what he wants. The apostle Paul said that all the promises of God in him are yes, and in him amen, to the glory of God through us (II Cor. 1:20).
Isn’t it exciting to walk with Jesus and allowing him to change us, knowing that he knows what’s best for us, and leading us into being his disciples for his kingdom work. I’m excited and I hope you are too.
