April 1 and Fishing

Written by Carl Greene

April 1, 2026

April 1st. In my home state of New York, it is opening day of trout season. I started many Aprils with a good amount of time fishing in Berlin, NY for the fresh water fish swimming the Little Hoosic River and its tributaries.

What I remember fondly is that I rarely fished those streams alone. I would often head out with my friend Seth, to find the fishing holes that he knew so well. Seth always out-fished me, in a way that allowed me to learn from him. Fishing together was simply a whole lot better than heading out on my own.

Interesting enough, fishing together is not just a childhood memory for me–our call to follow Jesus and fish with Him is a call to us individually and in community with one another. We also have a great opportunity to gather together this summer with the specific purpose of following and fishing in mind.

Following and Fishing Together

This year’s Conference Session will be centered around the theme, “Follow Me… I Will Make You Fishers of Men,” selected by President Rev. Ericessen Cooper. Throughout the week, worship services, devotions, seminars, and conversations will invite us to reflect on Christ’s call to discipleship and faithful witness in today’s world. Together.

Conference Session 2026 will take place July 21–26, 2026, at Calvin University in Grand Rapids, Michigan. This year’s gathering will be five days long, with Kingdom business completed during the first two days, allowing the latter portion of the week to focus more intentionally on learning, worship, and shared experiences. Also, Grand Rapids is known for its vibrant arts scene, diverse dining options, and nearby attractions, making it a great destination for individuals and families alike.
