This quarter, titled “The Soul of a Nation,” looks at a formative phase of Israel’s history in the books of Joshua, Judges, and 1 Samuel. What makes the soul of a nation? We could probably come up with a lot of answers for that. But for Israel, from conquering and entering the Promised Land, through the rebellious cycle of the Judges, to the beginning of being ruled by Kings, it all came back to their relationship with God. While it was a bumpy ride much of the time as they tried and failed over and over again to keep their covenant with their God, and were enticed by the gods and customs of neighboring peoples, through it all, God was faithful and continued to establish them as a nation and keep His promises to them. We can learn much from Israel’s experiences, if we allow ourselves to. If we are willing to take God at His word and trust Him in all things, being saved by grace through faith in Jesus and filled and empowered by the Holy Spirit, our journey can be much smoother than theirs.
You may note some subtle changes in format this quarter. The Committee on Uniform Series has changed their approach to the Lesson Guides to more of a propositional format, which impacts the “Heart of the Lesson.” The “Lesson Goals” have also been replaced by a “Lesson Summary.” This is all a work in progress and we welcome your input as we continue to implement the new format.
